The Sloanes, with ebony knobs, cost me $238.90. The Sloanes come with extra mounting screws, which is a good thing because the Gotoh tuners base plates were longer and switching to Sloanes left a mounting hole which I merely filled up with one of the extra screws. The Sloanes are precise, stable, and very smooth. The shafts must also be cut to length, this is best done on a metal lathe. The Sloane tuners will work on your bass, but the shaft holes must be enlarged. The Gotoh machines were choppy with a lot of free play which made them a real pain to tune (I posted my problems elsewhere on this site). Unfortunately, Ive encountered the problem before with these otherwise very good gears. I opted for the leaf bronze base plate with ebony knobs (the Ramirez has an ebony fingerboard with ebony edges and back strip) with black "rollers" (string collectors). Sloanes are mid-priced in my parts catalogue, though the box says they are a subsidiary of Waverly (which are the most expensive). ![]() I replaced the factory Gotoh machines on my Ramirez 2CWE with Irving Sloane tuners and can't express how happy I am with the results. At around 300, They are the same price point as the Gilbert tuning machines and deliver a bit more traditional of a look. ![]() Thought I'd pass along how satisfied I am with my new tuners.
